Presentation:

The Louis-Comtois Award was created in 1991 by the Contemporary Art Galleries Association to recognize excellence in visual arts and craft. The award, which is overseen jointly by AGAC and the Ville de Montréal, supports and promotes the work of an artist who has distinguished him or herself in Montreal’s contemporary art scene throughout the past 15 years.

Internationally recognized Canadian painter Louis Comtois (1945-1990) is renowned for his work in abstraction. From 1968 to 1990, he participated in exhibitions in Canada, France and the United States.

The Louis-Comtois Award includes:

a $7,500 cash prize for the winner;
a $2,500 budget for the promotion and organization of a solo exhibition in Montreal. This exhibition must be held within 36 months of the prize being awarded;
the acquisition, by the city, of one of the winner’s works, for the municipal collection.

Evaluation:

A five-member jury, representing the visual arts community and selected for their expertise, will evaluate the applications received.
